You’re going to love Zanzibar
Zanzibar is an island in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Tanzania, where white sand, turquoise water and coconut palms meet a rich history of Swahili, Arab and Portuguese influence. The air smells of spices, the dhows still sail with their triangular sails and the pace of life is slow and warm.
The north of the island, around Nungwi and Kendwa, has some of the best beaches in East Africa, with water that stays swimmable at all tides, and a sea that is a spectacular blue. From there, the best way to understand Zanzibar is on a traditional boat: you can swim with dolphins, snorkel on the reef and watch the sun sink into the ocean.

When to go to Zanzibar
Zanzibar is hot all year, with sea temperatures of about 26–29 °C. The rainy seasons are the main thing to avoid: the long rains from March to May and the short rains in November.
High season
June to October
The driest and coolest months, 25–30 °C, with clear skies, a pleasant sea breeze and good conditions for sailing and snorkelling.
€€€Hotel rates are high, especially in July and August; book well in advance.
High season
December to February
Hot and sunny, 30–34 °C, with the calmest seas and the best beach weather. Short, light showers are possible.
€€€The most expensive period, at Christmas and New Year in particular.
Low season
March to May and November
The rainy season, with heavy downpours, especially in April and May, and high humidity. The island is green, and many hotels offer discounts.
€The lowest rates of the year, but some businesses close and boat trips can be cancelled.
Our pick: June to October for the driest weather and good value outside July and August, and January to February for the hottest beach weather. Avoid April and May unless you want the lowest prices.
How to get to Zanzibar
Zanzibar is reached by air or sea from the Tanzanian mainland.
✈️
By plane
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is about 7 km from Stone Town, with direct flights from Europe and the Gulf, and from Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and other East African cities. Many visitors need a visa, so check the current requirements.
⛴️
By ferry
Fast ferries from Dar es Salaam take around two hours to reach Stone Town, with several departures a day.
🚗
By road on the island
The beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are about 60 km (roughly an hour and a half) from the airport. Most hotels arrange transfers, and taxis are easy to find.
