Crete by boat: Spinalonga and the Gulf of Mirabello
A private day with a boat crossing to Spinalonga. Pick your trip, book online and check the pick-up details.
You’re going to love Crete
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands. On its north-east coast the Gulf of Mirabello opens around the village of Elounda and the town of Agios Nikolaos, and the island of Spinalonga, with its Venetian fortress, stands at the mouth of the bay.
Our experience here is a private day, and it is fair to say what it is: a short crossing of about 20 minutes on a traditional wooden boat from Elounda to Spinalonga, and the rest of the day by road, with time in Agios Nikolaos. The sea is the way in to the best sight of the day.

The 5 best reasons to visit this corner of Crete
- 1
A fortress islandSpinalonga has a Venetian fortress begun in 1579, and you arrive by boat, with the walls coming closer across the water.
- 2
A story you can walk throughThe island was a leper colony until 1957. Its narrow streets still have abandoned houses, the hospital and the old marketplace.
- 3
The Gulf of MirabelloA wide bay of eastern Crete that you cross on a traditional wooden boat, between Elounda and the island.
- 4
A town on the waterAgios Nikolaos has a port lined with shops, cafés and tavernas, and a small round lake right in the middle of town.
- 5
An easy private dayHotel pick-up and drop-off, a private vehicle with a driver and bottled water: you only worry about enjoying it.

When to go to Crete
The east of Crete has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild winters, when most of the rain falls. Spinalonga publishes summer opening hours from April to October, so check the current hours; the calendar on the trip page shows the dates on sale.
Spring season
April to June
Warm and bright days with a lot of daylight, ideal for walking. The sea is still cool.
€€Prices are lower than in midsummer.
High season
July to August
Hot and dry, with the busiest island and breezy afternoons.
€€€The highest prices of the year: book ahead.
Late season
September to October
Still warm, with the sea at its warmest after the summer and fewer visitors.
€€Prices drop compared with the summer peak.
Our pick: late May, June or September, for warm days and fewer people. In July and August, bring a hat and sunscreen: Spinalonga is a rocky, open island.
How to get to Crete
Crete has two main airports and ferries from Athens. For Elounda and Agios Nikolaos, the airport of Heraklion is the closest.
✈️
By plane
Heraklion airport “Nikos Kazantzakis”, about 5 km from the city, is the busiest on the island; Chania airport serves the west. A new airport is planned at Kasteli to replace Heraklion’s, so check which one your airline uses.
⛴️
By ferry
Ferries link Piraeus, the port of Athens, with Heraklion and with Souda, the port of Chania; some sailings are overnight. Check the operators’ current timetables.
🚗
By road
From Heraklion airport to Elounda it is about 65 to 70 km, around an hour; from Chania it is about 200 km, around three hours. Agios Nikolaos is about 12 km from Elounda. Traffic changes these times.

Boat trips and attractions in Crete
To be clear: the boat is one stretch of this day. The tour lasts about 9 hours, and the sea part is the crossing of about 20 minutes on a traditional wooden boat from Elounda to Spinalonga, over the Gulf of Mirabello. It is the best way to arrive, with the Venetian fortress coming closer from the water. If you want a full day of sailing or swimming, this is not that trip.
At the end of this guide you will find the private tour, with live availability and secure online payment. The boat ticket and the entrance to the island are paid on site.
