Panama by boat: San Blas islands and Gatún Lake
Two trips with pick-up at your hotel in Panama City.
You’re going to love Panama
Panama is the narrow isthmus that joins two oceans, and its capital sits on the Pacific at the mouth of the Panama Canal, an 82 km waterway that opened on 15 August 1914. Panama City has a tropical climate, with an average temperature of about 27 °C and a dry season from December to April.
Our two trips start in the city, and there is no harbour to find: we pick you up at your hotel. One goes to the San Blas islands, in the Guna Yala territory; the other sails on Gatún Lake, inside the canal.

When to go to Panama
Panama is warm all year, with a dry season from December to April and a rainy one from May to November. Humidity is high: Panama City averages about 77 % and the highest monthly figure is in October. The Pacific side, where the city is, is somewhat drier than the Caribbean coast, which gets much more rain, and Panama lies outside the main development region for tropical cyclones. The weather can affect the speedboat leg to San Blas, and nobody can promise the weather, the sea or the wildlife.
Dry season
December to April
The driest months in the city, January to March being the driest: the best chance of sunny days for the water, although the Caribbean side can still see showers.
€€€Usually the time with the most visitors and the highest prices: book ahead.
Rainy season
May to August
The rainy season has begun, with warm, humid days and showers. Bring a light waterproof layer and check the forecast in the days before.
€Usually fewer visitors and more moderate prices; check when you book.
Rainy season
September to November
The wettest end of the year, with the highest average humidity in October (about 85 % in Panama City). Expect showers.
€Usually fewer visitors and more moderate prices; check when you book.
Our pick: December to April for the best chance of dry weather on the water, booking ahead. The rest of the year is warm too, with showers.

🚐
To the boat
There is no harbour or meeting point: the operator picks you up at your accommodation inside Panama City and confirms the exact time. A map of the area is below.

Boat trips and the Panama Canal
Our two trips in Panama are run by an independent operator, Panamaroutes, with guides in English and Spanish. The San Blas day lasts 13 hours: a 4x4 to the coast, a speedboat to the islands, a visit to Yandub (Isla Saíno) and its Guna culture, a Caribbean lunch and a kayak on Wissudub (Chichime), a stop at the Natural Pool, a sandbank in the middle of the sea for a swim and snorkel, and a last island among Perro Grande, Perro Chico or Diablo, before the return by boat and a private transfer. The lake trip lasts 3.5 hours and sails inside the canal, where you can see the large ships up close. Sightings of birds and other wildlife are never guaranteed, and the speedboat leg depends on the weather and the sea.
Guna Yala is an autonomous Indigenous territory, a comarca whose highest authority is the Guna General Congress, and tourism there is regulated by the Guna themselves. Treat it as someone’s home: follow your guide’s instructions and ask the operator beforehand which local fees are paid on the spot (we state no figure). At the end of this guide you will find our experiences in Panama, with live availability and secure online payment.

Good to know
- Both trips are run by an independent operator, Panamaroutes, with guides in English and Spanish. The wildlife on the lake is wild: birds and other animals cannot be guaranteed, and neither can the starfish of the San Blas sandbank.
- Pick-up at your accommodation is compulsory on both trips. The lake trip only picks up at hotels, Airbnbs, hostels or buildings inside Panama City, and the operator confirms the exact pick-up time. There is no meeting point.
- San Blas (13 hours, one departure at 05:00): 4x4 to the coast, speedboat to the islands, a visit to Yandub (Isla Saíno) and its Guna culture, a Caribbean lunch and a kayak on Wissudub (Chichime), the Natural Pool sandbank for snorkelling, and a last island among Perro Grande, Perro Chico or Diablo, before the speedboat back and a private transfer to the city. Breakfast is not included. The speedboat part depends on the weather and the sea. Bring your passport.
- Guna Yala is an autonomous Indigenous territory and the Guna people set its rules for visitors. Follow your guide’s instructions and ask the operator beforehand which local fees are paid on the spot. We do not state any figure.
- Lake Gatún (3.5 hours; departures at 07:00, 08:30 and 14:00): a motorboat ride inside the Panama Canal to see the big ships up close, with a local guide. Lunch is not included. It is not wheelchair accessible, not suitable for pets and has no infant seats. Ages: San Blas adult 16–80, youth 10–15, child 5–9, infant 0–4, 1 to 12 people per booking; lake adult 12+, child 6–11, infant 0–5, 2 to 15 people per booking.
What to bring
- Your passport (the San Blas trip asks for your documents) and your booking confirmation, on your phone or printed.
- Swimwear and sunscreen, and a towel and a change of dry clothes for the San Blas day.
- A hat and sunglasses: the sun is strong on the water. A light waterproof layer helps, as it can rain, especially from May to November.
- A camera, and a little cash in US dollars in case a local fee is payable on the day (ask the operator beforehand). The balboa is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and US banknotes are what circulates in Panama.
