Amsterdam from the water: canal cruises, walking and bike tours
A one-hour canal cruise on its own, or after a walk or a bike ride through the city.
You’re going to love Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and a city built on water: more than 100 km of canals, about 90 islands and a 17th-century canal ring that UNESCO has listed as a World Heritage Site since 2010.
The best way to understand it is from the water. A one-hour cruise takes you along the main canals, the Amstel river and the Seven Bridges, and you can pair it with a walk or a bike ride through the old centre. Here the water is canals and river, not open sea.

The 5 best reasons to visit Amsterdam
- 1
A UNESCO canal ringThe Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht were planned in the 17th century as a new port city, and UNESCO lists the whole canal ring as a World Heritage Site.
- 2
A city made of waterMore than 100 km of canals and about 90 islands, joined by hundreds of bridges.
- 3
Golden Age housesNarrow merchant houses, churches and bridges line the canals, and the view changes at every corner.
- 4
Compact and easy to seeThe historic centre is small enough to cover on foot, by bike and by boat.
- 5
Museums, parks and quiet courtyardsThe Rijksmuseum with Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, the Vondelpark and the hidden courtyard of the Begijnhof are all within easy reach.

When to go to Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a mild maritime climate: the weather is changeable and it can rain in any month. The calendar on each trip page shows the dates on sale.
Spring season
April to June
Mild, changeable days and longer evenings. Tulip season in the Netherlands runs through spring (Keukenhof opens from March to May), and King’s Day on 27 April fills the city with orange and crowds.
€€Mid-range overall; book ahead around King’s Day.
High season
July to September
The warmest and longest days, with the most visitors. Rain is still possible, so bring a light layer.
€€€The busiest canals of the year: book ahead.
Low season
October to March
Cool, damp, short days. The boats are covered, so the cruise runs in the rain. From late November to mid-January the Amsterdam Light Festival lights the canals (26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027; dates change every year); our cruise does not follow its official route.
€Generally the quietest months: check the calendar on the trip page.
Our pick: May or June, with long days and mild weather. In July and August, book ahead.
How to get to Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a major international airport and a central station right next to the old centre.
✈️
By plane
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main airport. From there trains reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 17 minutes, and the Airport Express bus (line 397) runs to Museumplein, the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein. Check the airlines for current routes.
🚆
By train
Amsterdam Centraal has direct international connections to cities such as London, Paris, Brussels, Cologne and Frankfurt. Check the operators for current timetables.
🚗
By car
The old centre is not made for cars. The city recommends its park-and-ride (P+R) car parks on the outskirts, with public transport into the centre. Check the city’s current rules and rates before you travel.
🚶
To the meeting points
Beursplein and Dam Square are a short walk from Centraal Station, the canal cruise boards nearby and the bike tour starts in the old centre. Your voucher gives the exact point.

Boat trips and attractions in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is best understood from the water: the city began on the banks of the Amstel and its canal ring was planned in the 17th century as a port city. Our one-hour cruise sails on an open boat with a bar on board and a canopy for the rain, along the main canals, the Amstel and the Seven Bridges. You can choose it without drinks, with two drinks or with unlimited drinks, and the combos add a guided walk or bike ride before the boat.
At the end of this guide you will find our experiences in Amsterdam, with live availability and secure online payment.

Exact meeting point
Each trip has its own meeting point; there is no hotel pick-up. The canal cruise boards near Centraal Station and Dam Square (the exact point is on your voucher, and for operational reasons it can move to the Anne Frank House). The two walking tours meet at Beursplein 1, and the bike tour starts at the “Bike is Ready” shop, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 114. In the combos, the cruise starts 30 to 45 minutes after the walk or the ride, and its tickets are sent by email the day before or on the day.
Address: Beursplein 1 and near Centraal Station · Amsterdam
Good to know
- The canal cruise lasts about an hour (60 to 75 minutes depending on the boat and the conditions). Commentary is in English, and the 13:30 and 17:30 departures are Spanish-friendly; times can change for operational reasons.
- It is a relaxed ride with a drink in hand, not a historical tour.
- In the combos, the walking-tour voucher is not valid for the boat: use the cruise tickets you receive by email. The walk or the ride takes about 2.5 hours.
- Walking and bike tours are in English or Spanish, and in Dutch on request. For the bike tour you must know how to ride a bike; the minimum age is 10 and children go with an adult.
- When it rains and in winter the boats are covered or have a canopy, so the cruise goes ahead. During the Amsterdam Light Festival our cruise does not follow the festival’s official route.
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes (closed shoes for the bike tour).
- Clothes for the weather, a light jacket and rain gear: evenings on the water can be cool.
- Your booking confirmation (on your phone or printed), and a valid ID if you book an option with alcohol.
- A camera or smartphone.
