Frequently asked questions about Ocho Rios
When is the best time to visit Ocho Rios, and what is the weather like?
Jamaica is warm all year. According to Wikipedia, lowland temperatures average about 23.5 to 30 °C, and the trade winds from the east and north-east bring rain throughout the year; by day a sea breeze, the “Doctor Breeze”, usually cools things down.
- Rain: according to the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, the driest period is December to March and the wet season runs from April to October, with a first peak in May and the main one in October.
- Cold fronts: between mid-October and mid-April they can bring cooler spells, especially at night.
- Hurricanes: the official season is June to November.
This is island-wide information, not a station in Ocho Rios, and not a forecast. The weather on the day rules: ask the operator before you sail. Our shared day trip lasts 4 hours and leaves at 12:30: catamaran to Dunn’s River Falls with snorkelling and open bar.
What happens if it rains, the sea is rough or a hurricane comes?
The trip pages do not explain what happens with rain or sea conditions, and we will not invent a policy. For anything about your day’s trip, ask the operator, who decides whether and how the trip goes ahead.
- The UK Foreign Office says the hurricane season normally runs from June to November and that hurricanes can bring fallen trees, damaged roads and flooding; it advises care near swamps, rivers, gullies and mangroves.
- Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica in October 2025 as a major hurricane, and all western parishes suffered significant damage, according to the same source. Check the current situation at your destination and your flights before you travel.
- It recommends travel insurance that covers your itinerary and planned activities.
What the pages do say: the day catamaran to Dunn’s River Falls includes a guided climb up a waterfall and asks for water shoes; no page guarantees the weather.
How do I get around Ocho Rios and the area?
For our trips you do not need your own transport: the shared day and sunset trips include pick-up at your hotel in Ocho Rios, the cruise-passenger excursion picks you up at the pier, and the private catamaran meets at Mahogany Beach (hotel transport is not included). For everything else, the UK Foreign Office advises:
- Use Jamaica Tourist Board approved taxis and minibuses for excursions, transfers and sightseeing: drivers should carry photo ID and display a blue sticker on the windscreen.
- Avoid walking and using buses at night.
- If you drive: roads are often poorly maintained, poorly signed and poorly lit at night; seatbelts are compulsory for the driver and front-seat passengers, and a UK photocard licence can be used for up to 6 months.
Taxi-hailing apps are available in some areas of Jamaica, but we could not confirm their availability in Ocho Rios.
What is Ocho Rios, and where does the name come from?
According to Wikipedia, Ocho Rios is a town in Saint Ann Parish on the north coast of Jamaica, with 16,671 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The Taíno settled the area, the Spanish called it Las Chorreras and the British took the island in 1655. It grew from a fishing village into a tourist destination, especially with the development of the 1960s, and it is a cruise-ship port of call; Reynolds Pier is also used for cargo.
“Ocho Rios” is Spanish for “eight rivers”, although the area does not have eight rivers, so the name may be a misnomer; it may be a British corruption of “Las Chorreras”, “the waterfalls”, a reference to nearby Dunn’s River Falls.
Our trips leave from here, not from Montego Bay: sunset party cruise · private catamaran.
What are Dunn’s River Falls?
According to Wikipedia, they are a terraced waterfall near Ocho Rios, about 55 m high and 180 m long (180 and 600 ft), that runs straight into the Caribbean Sea at the western end of a white-sand beach. It is one of very few travertine waterfalls in the world that flow directly into the sea: spring water rich in calcium carbonate builds up the tufa terraces, which are continuously rebuilt. Trip pages may quote other lengths, so we do not treat those figures as final.
- The climb: guides often lead visitors in a human chain because it can be demanding, and there are stairs alongside the falls for anyone who does not want to get wet or cannot manage the rocky terrain.
- History: the Battle of Las Chorreras was fought there in 1657, when the British defeated a Spanish force, and the 1988 film Cocktail was shot there.
On our trips the entrance and a guided climb are included, and water shoes are required and not included (day catamaran · cruise-passenger excursion).
How far is Ocho Rios from Montego Bay, Kingston and the airports?
Ocho Rios and Montego Bay are two different places on the north coast, and our trips leave from Ocho Rios. According to Wikipedia:
- Montego Bay: Sangster International Airport is about 97 km west of Ocho Rios, and the drive on the North Coast Highway, improved since 2007, takes about 1 h 45 min.
- Kingston: the North–South section of Highway 2000 opened in March 2016. Route planners give about 80 km and around 1 h 15 min by car (no official figure; the highway is a toll road).
- Ian Fleming International Airport: an airport at Boscobel, east of Ocho Rios. Sources give different distances, so we give none; check which airlines fly there.
Journey times depend on traffic and road conditions.
What do I need to enter Jamaica?
Requirements depend on your nationality and change, so check them on the official Jamaica Tourist Board website and with your country’s foreign ministry or consulate. The Tourist Board states, as examples:
- A valid passport (validity requirements vary by nationality); citizens of the US, Canada and the UK do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days, and other travellers may.
- A return or onward ticket.
- The online C5 declaration (enterjamaica.gov.jm), required of everyone arriving by air or by cruise ship, children included, one per person, which can be submitted up to 30 days before travel and is best saved as a screenshot.
If you arrive by cruise ship, this applies to you too before the cruise-passenger excursion.
What currency is used, what language is spoken, and what plugs are used?
Currency: the Jamaican dollar (JMD), issued by the Bank of Jamaica. According to Wikipedia, cent coins are no longer in use and cash payments are rounded to the nearest dollar. We found no official source on whether US dollars are accepted or on tipping customs, so we give no information on them; on our trips gratuities are not included.
Language: English is the official language, and Jamaican Patois is also spoken, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board.
Plugs: types A and B, at about 110 V and 50 Hz, according to Wikipedia. Check that your device accepts that voltage.
What do the official sources say about health and vaccines?
We are not a medical source. The UK Foreign Office says the following (check the current version, because it changes):
- Vaccines and risks: check the current recommendations on TravelHealthPro at least 8 weeks before travelling.
- Insurance: it recommends insurance that covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.
- Medical care: private and government facilities vary in standard, treatment can be expensive and immediate cash payment may be expected. Access to care is limited in the areas worst affected by Hurricane Melissa. For an ambulance it gives the number 110.
- Debris and standing water: after the hurricane they carry water-borne and mosquito-borne disease risks.
For the day trip to Dunn’s River Falls, bring reef-safe sunscreen, as the trip information asks.
Is it safe to travel to Ocho Rios, and what official advice is there?
Always check the travel advice of your own country’s foreign ministry, because it changes. The UK Foreign Office says tourist areas are not usually affected by gang-related crime, that robbery is the main motive for attacks on tourists and, among other advice:
- Avoid isolated areas and deserted beaches, even in daylight, and avoid walking or using buses at night.
- Use ATMs in daylight and in well-lit places, and keep valuables and your passport in the hotel safe.
- Some British nationals have reported sexual assault in tourist areas, often by someone they met there: avoid isolated places, do not share personal details or your room number with new acquaintances, use licensed providers and report any incident to hotel staff or your tour operator as soon as possible.
- Smoking marijuana (ganja) is illegal, and never carry anyone else’s luggage.
On our trips we collect you at your hotel or the pier, or meet you at Mahogany Beach (day catamaran · private catamaran).
Are the trips suitable for children, pregnant travellers and people with reduced mobility?
The trip pages give these indications; decide with these facts and ask before you book.
- None of the trips is wheelchair or stroller accessible or suitable for pets, and none is recommended for pregnant travellers; there are no infant seats.
- Infants must not sit on laps on the private catamaran and on the cruise-passenger excursion.
- The day catamaran and the sunset party cruise are also not recommended for people with back problems or heart conditions.
- The private catamaran is not recommended for people with limited mobility, and all its guests sign a waiver before boarding.
- The Dunn’s River Falls climb requires water shoes. Alcohol is for guests aged 18 and over on the day catamaran and the cruise-passenger excursion.
What is there to see near Ocho Rios besides the trips?
Some ideas from the Jamaica Tourist Board’s official site and Wikipedia (check hours and conditions at each place):
- Nature and adventure: Shaw Park Gardens, Prospect Plantation and the Yaaman Adventure Park (Prospect Estate), with zip-lining and dune-buggy or ATV tours, and Chukka Caribbean, with horseback riding, rafting and zip-lining. Mystic Mountain and Fern Gully are mentioned as attractions of the area on Wikipedia.
- History and culture: the Rio Nuevo Battle Site, the last stand between the British and Spanish; Seville Heritage Park, one of the richest archaeological sites on the island according to the Tourist Board; and Bob Marley’s mausoleum, which the Tourist Board includes in the area.
- Shopping: Island Village, with open-air shops and entertainment, and the craft markets.
If you prefer to see it from the water, look at the day catamaran to Dunn’s River Falls.
I am arriving at Ocho Rios on a cruise ship: what should I know?
Ocho Rios is a cruise-ship port of call; Wikipedia names Reynolds Pier for calls. The catamaran shore excursion for cruise passengers is designed for people with limited time in port: pick-up is at the Ocho Rios cruise pier, in the tour pick-up area just outside the terminal, timed with the ship’s arrival, and the catamaran leaves from and returns to Mahogany Beach. It lasts 4 hours and leaves at 12:30.
- Bring your booking confirmation, on your phone or printed, to show to the staff.
- Keep an eye on your ship’s all-aboard time: we cannot do that for you.
- All travellers arriving by cruise ship must complete the online C5 declaration, children included.
