Negril by catamaran: sunset, snorkelling and Seven Mile Beach
Trips that start in Negril, with hotel pick-up on the shared cruises.
You’re going to love Negril
Negril sits at the western end of Jamaica, in the parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover, and is known for its long white-sand beach and for the sunsets over the cliffs of the West End. It is a resort town of its own, about 80 km from Montego Bay and from Sangster International Airport, the nearest international airport.
Our trips start here, in Negril, and none of them starts in Montego Bay: two shared catamaran sunset cruises with a snorkelling stop, an open bar and a DJ, with hotel pick-up in Negril, and a private catamaran that sails along Seven Mile Beach to Booby Cay.

The 5 best reasons to visit Negril
- 1
Seven Mile BeachA long beach of white sand, running along Bloody Bay in the north and Long Bay in the south. Sources give different lengths for it, so think of “seven miles” as its name.
- 2
Sunsets and cliffsNegril faces west, and the rocky West End is where the sunset cruises head for cliff views and the Rick’s Café shoreline.
- 3
A marine park next doorThe Negril Marine Park, declared on 4 March 1998, covers about 160 km² of coast, from the Davis Cove River in Hanover to St John’s Point in Westmoreland.
- 4
Wetland and palmsBehind the beach lies the Great Morass, a wetland crossed by the Negril River, and within it the Royal Palm Reserve, which protects wetland and forest.
- 5
A lighthouse from 1894The Negril Lighthouse stands on the West End cliffs and is a listed national monument.

When to go to Negril
Jamaica is warm all year, with trade winds from the north-east and east. Rain falls mostly between May and October, with peaks in May and October. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and its most active period is mid-August to mid-October. We have no climate table for Negril itself: in Montego Bay, the nearest reference, the mean daily maximum is about 30 °C and the minimum about 24 °C over the year, and September and October are the wettest months. Nobody can promise the weather or the sea on a given day.
Drier months
December to April
Generally the drier half of the year, with warm days and the trade winds: the best chance of settled weather for the water.
€€€Usually the busiest and most expensive time for hotels: book early.
Early rains
May to July
Hot and humid, with the first rainfall peak in May. The hurricane season has opened, although its most active period comes later.
€€Usually more moderate prices than in winter; check when you book.
Hurricane season peak
August to November
The wettest end of the year, and the most active part of the hurricane season (mid-August to mid-October). Follow the official forecasts: the weather can change the sea and the plans.
€Usually the lowest prices. Travel insurance and a flexible plan are worth considering.
Our pick: December to April for the best chance of settled weather on the water. If you travel in hurricane season, follow the official forecasts and keep your plans flexible.
How to get to Negril
Most visitors fly into Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and continue by road. Our trips start in Negril, not at the airport.
✈️
By plane
Sangster International Airport (MBJ), in Montego Bay, is the nearest international airport, about 80 km from Negril. Negril also has a small aerodrome; ask your airline or travel agent about flights to it.
🚕
By taxi or transfer
Allow roughly an hour and a half by road from Montego Bay airport. The UK government advises using Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) approved taxis and minibuses, with a photo ID and a blue JTB sticker. Arranging the transfer through your accommodation is the simplest option.
🚗
By car
Jamaica drives on the left. If you hire a car, check the rules and road conditions beforehand; many visitors prefer a transfer.
🚐
To the boat
On the shared sunset cruises, hotel pick-up in Negril is offered when you book; otherwise the start point is on Norman Manley Boulevard, by the beach. The private catamaran starts on Seven Mile Beach and does not include pick-up. A map is below.

Catamaran trips from Negril
Our shared sunset cruises last four hours and leave at 14:30. They include a snorkelling stop with equipment provided, an open bar, Jamaican snacks and a live DJ, and they sail along the coast towards Rick’s Café. The operator calls the day before to confirm the place and time, and you wade into waist-deep water to climb aboard. The private catamaran lasts four hours, with departures at 09:00 and 14:00, and gives you the boat and crew to yourselves, with a snorkelling stop at or near Booby Cay. What you see from the water, from fish to cliff jumpers, depends on the day and cannot be promised, and the sea and the weather can change the plan.

What you will see
What you will see from the water and along the coast of Negril.
Seven Mile Beach
The long white-sand beach of Negril, along Bloody Bay to the north and Long Bay to the south. The name says seven miles, but sources give different lengths, so treat it as a name more than a measurement.

The West End cliffs and Rick’s Café
The rocky western coast of Negril, where the sunset cruises head for views of the cliffs and the Rick’s Café shoreline. Jumping spots along these cliffs are part of what people come to see.
