Barbados by boat: turtles, snorkelling, fishing and water skiing
Four trips from Bridgetown on the Caribbean coast of the island.
You’re going to love Barbados
Barbados is an island in the eastern Caribbean, part of the Lesser Antilles. Its capital, Bridgetown, lies on Carlisle Bay on the south-west coast, and Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
The west coast faces the Caribbean Sea and has calm, swimmable water, while the east coast faces the open Atlantic and is much rougher. That is why our sea trips start in Bridgetown and follow the calm side of the island: snorkelling with turtles, a private boat, light fishing and water skiing.

The 5 best reasons to visit Barbados
- 1
A UNESCO capitalHistoric Bridgetown and its Garrison, inscribed in 2011, keeps a collection of colonial warehouses and port buildings that tell the story of British trade and defence in the Caribbean.
- 2
Calm Caribbean waterThe west coast is the sheltered side of the island, with flat, swimmable water that suits snorkelling. The east coast is open to the Atlantic.
- 3
Sea turtlesHawksbill turtles nest on the west and south coasts from April to November, leatherbacks on the east and south coasts from February to July, and green turtles can be seen close to shore. Sightings are never guaranteed.
- 4
Protected reefsCarlisle Bay and Folkestone Marine Park in Holetown are protected marine areas, with fish, coral and, in Carlisle Bay, wrecks on the seabed.
- 5
Warm sea and sunDaytime highs in Bridgetown average between about 29 and 31 °C all year, with around eight hours of sun a day.

When to go to Barbados
Barbados is warm all year, and the trade winds keep it breezy. The driest months run roughly from December to May; showers are more frequent from about June to November, which is also the Atlantic hurricane season (1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September). The calendar on each trip page shows the dates on sale.
High season
December to April
The driest and most settled months. Visit Barbados lists sailfish and marlin fishing from January to April.
€€€Usually the busiest and most expensive time for flights and stays: book ahead.
Shoulder season
May to June
Still largely dry and a little hotter, with showers becoming more frequent as the rainy season sets in. The hurricane season officially starts on 1 June, though early-season storms are uncommon.
€€Mid-range: a good balance between weather and crowds.
Low season
July to November
The rainy season, with showers that are often brief and fall mostly at night or early in the morning. It is also the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season: storms usually pass to the north or south of Barbados rather than over it, but check the forecast before you travel.
€Generally the lowest prices of the year.
Our pick: January to April for the most settled weather, or May for a good balance. In the high season, book ahead.
How to get to Barbados
Barbados has one international airport, and Bridgetown has a cruise port on Carlisle Bay.
✈️
By plane
Grantley Adams International Airport is about 13 km from the centre of Bridgetown, at Seawell in Christ Church parish, with direct flights from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and other points. Check the airlines for current routes.
🚕
By taxi or bus
Taxis have no meters, so agree the fare with the driver before you set off; the airport has a taxi stand open 24 hours. Government buses (blue with yellow stripes), yellow minibuses and white ZR vans cover most routes at a flat fare, so have it ready. Check current fares and routes locally.
🚢
By cruise ship
The Port of Bridgetown, the Deep Water Harbour, lies at the north-western end of Carlisle Bay and is the main port of entry for cruise ships. Allow time to reach the meeting point and check the details the operator sends you before the trip.
🚶
To the meeting point
Independence Square is in the centre of Bridgetown. The operator confirms the exact time and meeting details at least 24 hours before the trip.

Boat trips and attractions in Barbados
Barbados is best enjoyed from the water, especially along the calm west and south-west coast. Our four trips are run by an independent operator, Princess Aurora Cruises, from a meeting point in Bridgetown: a shared snorkelling trip, a private boat with guided snorkelling for up to 7 guests, a light fishing trip, and a water skiing and inflatable rides outing. On the snorkelling and fishing trips drinks are included, with rum punch and beer for guests over 18 only; younger guests get juices, soft drinks and water.
For reference, Visit Barbados lists barracuda all year, sailfish and marlin from January to April, tuna from January to May, and mahi mahi and wahoo around the reefs. Our fishing trip is a light outing for families and beginners, not a big-game charter. At the end of this guide you will find our experiences in Barbados, with live availability and secure online payment.

Good to know
- The snorkelling trips are guided in English. The private boat takes up to 7 guests, and the shared trip has a limited number of places.
- Snorkelling masks, snorkels and flotation devices are provided, and the crew helps non-swimmers and less confident swimmers. Turtles often show up, but sightings cannot be guaranteed: they are wild animals, so do not touch, chase or feed them.
- On the snorkelling and fishing trips drinks are included (rum punch, beer, juices, soft drinks and water), with alcohol for guests over 18 only: younger guests get juices, soft drinks and water.
- Water skiing and inflatable rides: the minimum age is 8, and safety vests, skis and tubes are provided. It is not recommended for people with back problems or for pregnant travellers.
- None of the trips is wheelchair accessible, and they are not recommended for people with heart conditions.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a towel, and a change of dry clothes: you may get splashed.
- Sunscreen (a reef-friendly one is a good idea), a hat and sunglasses: the Barbados sun is strong.
- Your booking confirmation (on your phone or printed).
- A waterproof case or bag for your phone, and a camera.
