Sailing in Bocas del Toro: Starfish Beach, Dolphin Bay and coral gardens
A 6-hour catamaran day from Bocas Town, shared or private, with lunch and snorkelling.
You’re going to love Bocas del Toro
Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast, close to the Costa Rican border, with around 50 cays and some 200 tiny islets scattered over about 250 km². Bocas Town, on Isla Colón, is its hub, and from there everything is a short boat ride away: warm shallow water, mangroves, coral gardens, seagrass and forest down to the shore. Columbus explored this coast in 1502, looking for a passage to the Pacific.
Our two trips are the same 6-hour sailing catamaran day, either shared or as a private charter. They follow one of two routes, Starfish Beach or Dolphin Bay, and finish at the coral gardens off Isla Solarte, with lunch on board and snorkelling gear included.

The 5 best reasons to visit Bocas del Toro
- 1
An archipelago made for boatsAround 50 cays and some 200 tiny islets, with Isla Colón, Isla Bastimentos and Isla Solarte among the main islands. Almost everything worth seeing here is reached by water, and the crossings are short.
- 2
A national marine parkIsla Bastimentos National Marine Park, created in 1988, covers about 132 km² of beaches, mangroves, coral reefs and tropical forest. The Panama Tourism Authority classes it as an IUCN category II national park.
- 3
Dolphins in Dolphin BayA small community of bottlenose dolphins lives in the waters of the archipelago, and Dolphin Bay is where most dolphin watching happens. We never promise a sighting, and we ask for patience and distance when they appear.
- 4
Warm water and reefs all yearDaily highs of about 31 °C and lows of about 21 °C, with a drier spell early in the year and another in September and October. Snorkelling over the coral gardens is part of both our trips.
- 5
A culture of its ownThe islands have their own English-based creole, Bocas del Toro Creole, a banana-growing past and Indigenous territories on the nearby mainland. Bocas Town has a distinctly Caribbean character.
What to do in Bocas del Toro
- Sail the archipelago on a catamaranOur 6-hour day leaves at 10:00 and follows one of two routes, Starfish Beach or Dolphin Bay, before the Solarte coral gardens. Lunch is cooked on board and snorkelling gear is included.
- Look for dolphins in Dolphin BayA lagoon a few miles from Bocas Town where a small, resident community of bottlenose dolphins is often watched from boats. Keep a calm distance: they live here all year, and boat traffic is their main pressure.
- Meet the starfish at Starfish BeachA shallow beach on Isla Colón known for its starfish in the clear water; how many you see varies. Look and photograph, but do not lift them out of the water: it is the usual advice and we ask you to follow it.
- Visit the national marine parkIsla Bastimentos National Marine Park, with the Zapatilla Cays, is where sea turtles nest on the beaches, and the hawksbill, an endangered species, is the one the tourism authority highlights, from April to October. It is a separate excursion and not one of our trips.
- Wander Bocas Town and the nearby islandsStroll Bocas Town, cross to Isla Carenero, only about two minutes by boat, or head to the beaches of Isla Colón and Bastimentos. A day on the water and an evening ashore go well together.

When to go to Bocas del Toro
Bocas del Toro is warm all year, with highs of about 31 °C and lows of about 21 °C. It rains in every month, but the year has a rhythm: a drier spell from January to April and another in September and October, and a wetter stretch around December, which is the wettest month. Hurricanes do not directly hit Panama, though they can bring heavy rain. Nobody can promise the weather, the sea or the wildlife, and our itinerary depends on conditions.
Drier months
January to April
The drier part of the year, with March the driest month in the climate chart: the best chance of calm, bright days on the water, though showers can still pass through.
€€€Usually the busiest period for visitors and the highest prices: book ahead.
Wetter months
May to August
Warm, humid and showery, with the wetter weather easing towards late August. This is also the start of the sea-turtle nesting season on the park’s beaches, which runs to October.
€Usually fewer visitors and more moderate prices; check when you book.
Mixed
September to December
September and October are often drier, while November and December bring heavy rain, December being the wettest month. Pack a light waterproof layer and check the forecast.
€€Prices tend to follow the weather: more moderate in the wet months, higher at the end of the year; check when you book.
Our pick: February to April for the best chance of dry, calm days on the water, or September and October if you prefer fewer visitors. The sea and the weather decide the route on the day.
How to get to Bocas del Toro
Most visitors fly from Panama City or take the road to Almirante and a water taxi. Our trips start in Bocas Town.
✈️
By plane
According to the Panama Tourism Authority, the flight from Marcos A. Gelabert airport (Albrook) in Panama City to the airport on Isla Colón takes about 45 minutes. Albrook is the domestic airport, not the international one at Tocumen, so allow time to cross the city.
🚌
By road and water taxi
The main entry point from the mainland is the port of Almirante, with a water taxi of about 35 minutes to Isla Colón. Buses to Almirante leave from the Albrook terminal; driving from Panama City takes much of a day. Check timetables locally.
🌎
From Costa Rica
A bridge between Sixaola and Guabito is used by travellers crossing the border. Entry requirements and border hours change, so check them with the official sources of both countries before you travel.
🚤
To the boat
Our trips include free water-taxi pick-up from eligible hotels on Isla Colón and Isla Carenero, about 30 minutes before departure. If you stay elsewhere, you meet at the Boteros dock in Bocas Town. The map below shows it.

Sailing the Bocas del Toro archipelago
Our shared catamaran day and our private charter last 6 hours and leave at 10:00 on a 42-foot sailing catamaran. The shared day has an English- and Spanish-speaking captain and crew. Each follows one of two routes, Starfish Beach or Dolphin Bay, depending on availability and conditions, and then the Solarte coral gardens for snorkelling. Lunch is cooked fresh on board (vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request on the shared day), and the shared day sails with a maximum of 22 guests; the private charter is reserved for your group, up to 22. Sightings of dolphins or other wildlife are never guaranteed.
The archipelago is a living place: the dolphins are a small, resident community, the starfish are fragile, and the reefs and turtle beaches are protected. Keep your distance, do not stand on coral, do not take anything away and follow the crew’s instructions. At the end of this guide you will find our experiences in Bocas del Toro, with live availability and secure online payment.

Good to know
- Shared day: it needs a minimum of 8 guests to sail, with a maximum of 22. If the minimum is not reached, you can reschedule for free or get a refund. Private charter: the whole boat is yours, up to 22 guests.
- The route is one of two, Starfish Beach or Dolphin Bay, followed by the Solarte coral gardens. Which one depends on availability and operational conditions such as the weather and the sea. On the private charter, your preferences are considered whenever conditions allow. Sightings of dolphins, starfish or other wildlife are never guaranteed.
- Included: lunch cooked fresh on board, snorkelling gear, and a cooler with ice for your own drinks. On the shared day, vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request. Not included: alcoholic and soft drinks, and gratuities.
- The shared day has a captain and crew who speak English and Spanish. It is not wheelchair or stroller accessible, infant seats are not available, and it is not recommended for pregnant travellers. On the private charter, infants must not sit on laps. Check the trip page for ages and details.
- Look, do not touch: do not lift starfish out of the water, do not stand on coral and keep a calm distance from dolphins. The dolphins and the park’s sea turtles are wild animals and protected places.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a towel, and a change of dry clothes for after the snorkelling.
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses: the sun is strong on the water. A light waterproof layer is useful, because it can rain in any month.
- Your booking confirmation, on your phone or printed, and the name of your accommodation: you give it when you book if you want the water-taxi pick-up.
- Your own drinks (alcoholic and soft drinks are not included, and there is a cooler with ice on board) and a little cash for the crew’s tip, which is not included.
What you will see
What the day passes and what is nearby.
Starfish Beach
A beach on the northern side of Isla Colón, near Boca del Drago, known for its starfish in the shallow, clear water. It is one of the two routes of our day; how many starfish you see varies, and they are best left in the water.
Dolphin Bay
A lagoon a few miles from Bocas Town where a small, resident community of bottlenose dolphins lives. It is the other route of our day. Many boats come here, so the crew keeps a calm distance, and a sighting is never guaranteed.
The coral gardens off Isla Solarte
The snorkelling stop that closes the day, in an archipelago whose waters hold coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. Isla Solarte, also called Nancy’s Cay, is close to Bocas Town; in 1899 the United Fruit Company built a hospital on a hill at its western end.
Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park
Created in 1988, it covers about 132 km² of beaches, mangroves, coral reefs and forest, with the Zapatilla Cays, where sea turtles nest. It is a separate excursion and not part of our day.
