You’re going to love Cancún
Cancún is the Mexican Caribbean at full volume: a long barrier island of white sand and turquoise water, a lagoon behind it, warm weather and a sea that stays between 26 and 29 °C for most of the year. Beyond the resorts, it is the gateway to Isla Mujeres, the Mesoamerican Reef and some of the most beautiful dive and snorkel sites in the Caribbean.
The best of the Riviera Maya is reached by water: islands with calm beaches, reef gardens where turtles feed and sunsets that colour the whole bay. From Puerto Juárez or the Hotel Zone, a boat takes you into that postcard within minutes.

The 5 best reasons to visit Cancún
- 1
White-sand beaches and turquoise waterMore than 20 km of beaches along the Hotel Zone, with calm, shallow water on the lagoon side and open Caribbean on the other.
- 2
The Mesoamerican ReefThe second-largest barrier reef in the world, with excellent snorkelling and diving a short boat ride from the coast.
- 3
Isla Mujeres and Isla ContoyA relaxed island 20 minutes by ferry and a national park for birds and wildlife a little further north.
- 4
Mayan culture within reachChichén Itzá, Tulum and Cobá, plus cenotes (natural freshwater pools) within a day’s excursion.
- 5
Easy to reach and well connectedOne of Latin America’s busiest airports, with direct flights from Europe, the US and Canada.
What to do in Cancún
- Take the ferry to Isla MujeresA 20-minute ferry from Puerto Juárez or Playa Tortugas to a small island with beaches, golf-cart tours and a laid-back vibe.
- Snorkel or dive at MUSAThe Underwater Museum of Art has hundreds of sculptures under the sea, now part of the reef ecosystem.
- Visit Chichén ItzáOne of the New Seven Wonders of the World, about two and a half hours by road; go early to avoid the heat.
- Swim in a cenoteNatural freshwater pools in the limestone, such as those near Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Valladolid.
- See TulumMayan ruins perched above the Caribbean sea, about two hours south of Cancún.

When to go to Cancún
Cancún has a warm tropical climate all year. The main differences are the rainy season and the hurricane season (June to November).
High season
December to April
Dry and sunny, 26–30 °C, with little rain and the clearest water. The best weather for boat trips and snorkelling.
€€€Hotel rates are at their highest, especially at Christmas, New Year and Easter; book well in advance.
Shoulder season
May and November
Hot, 29–32 °C, with more humidity and some showers. In some years, sargassum seaweed is more frequent on the beaches from spring to summer.
€€Lower rates than in winter and fewer visitors.
Low season
June to October
Hot and humid, 30–34 °C, with the rainy season and the highest risk of hurricanes from August to October. Whale sharks gather near the coast from about June to September.
€The cheapest months, though storms can disrupt trips.
Our pick: December to March for the best weather and clear water, and November or early December for lower prices. In summer, a whale shark excursion can be a highlight, but keep flexible dates for the weather.
How to get to Cancún
Cancún is on the north-east tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo.
✈️
By plane
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is one of Mexico’s busiest, about 15–25 minutes from the Hotel Zone, with direct flights from Europe, the US and Canada.
🚗
By car
Highway 307 runs south along the Riviera Maya to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Taxis and transfers are the simplest option for short trips; a rental car is useful for excursions.
🚌
By bus
ADO buses connect the airport and the city centre with Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and local buses (R-1 and R-2) run along the Hotel Zone.
⛴️
By ferry
Ferries to Isla Mujeres leave from Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas, a short taxi ride from the Hotel Zone.
