Samaná by boat: whales, Los Haitises and Cayo Levantado
Trips from Moto Marina across Samaná Bay.
You’re going to love Samaná
Samaná is a peninsula on the north-east coast of the Dominican Republic, and the bay that lies behind it is a significant breeding site for humpback whales. The town of Santa Bárbara de Samaná sits on the north shore of the bay, among the hills of the Sierra de Samaná. Spanish families from the Canary Islands founded it in 1756, according to Wikipedia.
Our trips start at the town marina and go out across the bay: whales in season, the mangroves and caves of Los Haitises National Park, the beach of Cayo Levantado, a snorkelling reef, or the sunset. Samaná has its own identity, quieter and greener than the big resort coast.

The 5 best reasons to visit Samaná
- 1
Humpback whales in the bayEvery winter humpbacks come to Samaná Bay, which is part of the Dominican marine mammal sanctuary. The Ministry of Environment opens the whale season each year, from 15 January, and authorises the operators. Sightings are never guaranteed.
- 2
A peninsula with its own characterThe Sierra de Samaná rises behind the coast, its highest point is Monte Mesa at 605 m, and the peninsula has fishing villages, wide beaches and a history that includes American families who settled here in the 1820s, known as the Samaná Americans.
- 3
Los Haitises National ParkAbout 826 km² of mangroves, limestone hills and caves with ancient rock art, created in 1976. Most visitors reach it by sea, and pelicans and frigatebirds nest on its bird islands.
- 4
Cayo LevantadoA small island in the bay, about 0.5 km by 0.9 km, nicknamed Bacardi Island after the rum advertisements in which it appeared. A swim and lunch on the beach is a classic stop of a day on the water.
- 5
Rainforest, waterfalls and quiet beachesThe peninsula has a tropical rainforest climate. Inland, El Limón has three waterfalls of up to 47 m, and the coast has beaches such as Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón, reachable by boat or on foot.
What to do in Samaná
- Go whale watching in seasonA half-day or full-day catamaran trip across the bay to watch humpbacks with a guide. Our trips list the season as 15 January to 31 March, and the whale sanctuary fee is paid separately.
- Spend a day in Los HaitisesA full day by catamaran past the bird islands, through the mangrove channels and into the caves with rock art, finishing with lunch on Cayo Levantado.
- Sail and snorkel at Cayo La FarolaA day under sail across the bay with a snorkelling stop at the reef of Cayo La Farola, lunch on Cayo Levantado and an open bar, or a shorter five-hour version with two swim stops and lunch on board.
- Watch the sunset from the bayA three-hour evening cruise from the marina with an open bar, music and a stop in calm water for the sunset, with the town’s waterfront and bridges in view.
- Charter your own boatA private catamaran or yacht for your group, for Cayo Levantado or for Los Haitises, with a captain and crew. Check each page for what is included.

When to go to Samaná
Samaná has a tropical rainforest climate and is warm all year: the NOAA averages for 1961 to 1990 give a mean of 26.2 °C and about 2,200 mm of rain a year, with February the driest month (about 110 mm) and November the wettest (about 257 mm). The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. The humpback whales are here in winter, and the official season opens on 15 January. The weather can affect a sailing, and nobody can promise the sea, the weather or the whales.
Whale season
January to March
The season of the humpback whales: the official season opens on 15 January and our trips list it until 31 March. February is the driest month on average. Sightings are never guaranteed.
€€€Usually the busiest and most expensive time: book ahead.
Warm, no whales
April to June
The whales have gone, but Los Haitises, Cayo Levantado and the snorkelling days carry on. Warm, humid days with showers; the hurricane season officially starts on 1 June.
€€Usually more moderate prices; check when you book.
Hurricane season
July to December
The Atlantic hurricane season runs to 30 November and November is the wettest month on average. The sea and the weather can affect the sailings; check the forecast in the days before.
€Usually fewer visitors and lower prices; check when you book.
Our pick: late January to March if you want the whales, booking ahead. For Los Haitises and the island beaches any month works, keeping the hurricane season in mind.
How to get to Samaná
Most visitors fly into Samaná El Catey airport or drive from Santo Domingo, and our trips start at the marina in Samaná town.
✈️
By plane
Samaná El Catey International Airport (AZS) opened in 2006, about 40 minutes by car from Samaná town and about 30 minutes from Las Terrenas, according to Wikipedia. Scheduled routes change, so check the airlines. Arroyo Barril airport also serves the peninsula for domestic flights.
🚗
By car
A motorway between Santo Domingo and the peninsula opened in 2008, and Las Terrenas is about 225 km from Santo Domingo. The UK Foreign Office warns that driving outside the main cities at night can be dangerous.
🚕
By taxi or transfer
The simplest way from the airport to your accommodation is a transfer arranged with your hotel or an authorised airport taxi. The UK Foreign Office advises using an authorised airport or hotel taxi service or a registered provider.

To the boat
Most trips start at Moto Marina, 3 Av. La Marina, in Samaná town. Cruise passengers meet the crew near the cruise pier, a 4 to 8 minute walk from the boarding area. A map of the area is below.

Boat trips in Samaná Bay
Our Samaná trips are run by a local operator with a professional captain and a multilingual crew. Some are shared on a catamaran and others are private charters; they range from a three-hour sunset cruise to a full day in Los Haitises with lunch on Cayo Levantado, and there are shore excursions for cruise passengers. What is included, lunch, drinks and snorkelling gear, changes from trip to trip, so check each page.
The bay and its islands are protected places: the whales are wild, the bird islands are nesting sites and the park and the sanctuary charge their own fees, which are paid separately and not included in the price. The Ministry of Environment authorises the whale-watching operators, and we recommend following your crew’s instructions. At the end of this guide you will find our experiences in Samaná, with live availability and secure online payment.

Exact meeting point
Most trips start at Moto Marina, 3 Av. La Marina, in Samaná town; the start time is on each trip page. This is where you check in, meet the crew and board. Hotel pick-up is not part of these trips. The shore excursions for cruise passengers work differently: the crew meets you near the cruise pier (Samaná Bayport, Samaná Town Marina or Embat Dock), within a 4 to 8 minute walk, and walks you to the boarding area. Give your ship’s name when you book. The trip pages mention a back-to-ship guarantee on some of them: read the conditions there.

Good to know
- A local operator runs all these trips with a professional captain and a multilingual crew. The whale-watching narration is listed in English, Spanish, French and Italian. Wildlife is wild: nobody can guarantee whales, birds or any other animal.
- Whale watching is seasonal. The official whale season opens on 15 January and our whale trips list it until 31 March; outside those dates the whale trips do not run. The whale sanctuary fee is not included and is paid at the gate, as the trip pages say; the Los Haitises national park fee is not included either. We state no amounts.
- Los Haitises (full day): a catamaran across the bay, a bird island with pelicans and frigatebirds, the mangrove channels, caves with ancient rock art and lunch at Cayo Levantado. The shore-excursion version names Cueva de la Línea and Cueva del Ferrocarril.
- Cayo Levantado: most full-day trips include a lunch at the beach restaurant, but the 5-hour sailing and snorkelling trip anchors off the island with no landing, and lunch and drinks differ from trip to trip: read what each page includes. The beach-day shore excursion runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.
- The trips are not wheelchair or stroller accessible, there are no infant seats, and they are not recommended for pregnant travellers. Life jackets and marine insurance are listed on every page; alcohol and premium spirits are included on some and not on others.
What to bring
- Your booking confirmation, on your phone or printed, and a photo ID. If you come from a cruise ship, also your ship’s name (the booking asks for it) and the time your ship says you must be back on board.
- Swimwear, a towel and a change of dry clothes; on the snorkelling trips the gear is listed on the trip page, so check it there.
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses: the sun is strong on the bay. A light waterproof layer is useful, because showers are common in this part of the island, and a layer for the breeze on the water during the whale-watching and sunset trips.
- A camera, and a little cash for the fees that are paid separately (the whale sanctuary and the national park, where the trip page says so), for tips and for souvenirs. We state no amounts: they can change.
