Tenerife by boat: Viking cruises to watch dolphins and whales
Two cruises from Los Cristianos, on the south-west coast of the island.
You’re going to love Tenerife
Tenerife is an Atlantic island of the Canary archipelago, shaped by volcanoes: Mount Teide, in a National Park that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2007, rises above 3,700 m. The south-west coast is the sunniest part of the island, with a mild climate and average temperatures between 20 and 30 °C all year, according to the Cabildo de Tenerife.
The sea between Tenerife and La Gomera is home to dolphins and pilot whales. Our cruises leave from Los Cristianos, on the south coast, aboard a Viking ship.

When to go to Tenerife
Tenerife is a year-round destination: the coast ranges roughly from 18 °C in winter to 26 °C in summer, and the trade winds keep the climate mild. The south is much sunnier than the north, where trade-wind clouds gather on the slopes. Dolphins and pilot whales live off the south-west coast all year, but sightings are never guaranteed, and the sea can be choppier on some days. Occasional calima (Saharan dust) episodes can haze the sky and raise temperatures; check the AEMET forecast.
High season
December to March
The coolest months, with coastal temperatures down to about 18 °C. Pack a light layer for the deck, and expect the odd breezy or cloudy day.
€€€Usually the busiest and most expensive time for flights and stays, especially around Christmas: book ahead.
Shoulder season
April to June and October to November
Warm, bright days in a mild climate: a good balance for a boat trip and for exploring the island.
€€Mid-range prices and fewer crowds than in winter.
Summer
July to September
The warmest months, with coastal temperatures up to about 26 °C and the best weather for a swim.
€€Mid-range to high, with demand rising during the school holidays, especially in August.
Our pick: spring and autumn for mild weather and fair prices, or summer if you want the warmest swim. Whenever you come, book ahead in the school holidays.
How to get to Tenerife
Tenerife has two international airports, and Los Cristianos is on the south coast.
✈️
By plane
Tenerife Sur airport (TFS), in Granadilla de Abona, is the one for the south: it is about 20 minutes by road from Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. Tenerife Norte (TFN) is near La Laguna and Santa Cruz, mainly for inter-island and mainland Spain flights; allow 45 minutes to an hour by motorway between north and south.
🚌
By bus
TITSA, the island’s public bus operator, links the south with Santa Cruz and the airport, including Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. Lines and timetables change, so check them at titsa.com.
🚗
By car or taxi
The TF-1 motorway runs along the south coast to Los Cristianos. Parking near the port is limited and fills up at the weekend, so leave plenty of time or come by taxi or bus.

Boat trips and wildlife in Tenerife
The waters off the south-west coast of Tenerife are home to many cetaceans: Turismo de Tenerife says common bottlenose dolphins and tropical pilot whales live there all year round, and more than 20 species have been recorded. Our two cruises are run by an independent operator, Viking Tenerife Ragnarok, aboard a Viking ship that the operator describes as the only one in the Canary Islands. The 2-hour cruise is a shorter version for families and groups, with no Viking show, swim stop or drinks. The 3-hour cruise heads for the channel, sails past Playa de las Américas and Adeje, and anchors near cliffs and beaches for a swim or snorkel, with drinks included (alcohol for guests over 18 only) and food as an optional extra. The Viking enactment, games and swim stops are not always possible: it depends on the sea conditions, and safety comes first.
Watching cetaceans is regulated in Spain. Real Decreto 1727/2007 sets a protection space of 500 m around the animals, an exclusion zone of at least 60 m that boats may not enter, a speed of no more than four knots, and bans feeding the animals and swimming or diving in the exclusion zone; boats must also hold the authorisation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. At the end of this guide you will find our experiences in Tenerife, with live availability and secure online payment.

Good to know
- Both cruises sail on the Ragnarok, a Viking ship that the operator describes as the only Viking boat in the Canary Islands. The crew speaks Spanish and English.
- The dolphins and pilot whales are wild animals, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Spanish law sets distances that boats must keep from cetaceans, and swimming within the exclusion zone around them is not allowed: the swim stop of the 3-hour cruise is made separately, at anchor near the cliffs and beaches.
- The 2-hour cruise is the shorter version: it does not include the Viking show, a swim stop or drinks, and it suits families, companies and private groups. The 3-hour cruise adds a swim or snorkel stop and drinks, with food as an optional extra and optional Viking face painting. Alcohol is only for guests over 18.
- On every trip the plan is to offer some Viking enactment, games, swim stops and face painting, but this is not always possible: it depends on the sea conditions, and safety comes first.
- Ages: adult 12–99, child 4–11, infant 0–3. There are restrooms on board but no infant seats. The trips are not suitable for pets; tell the operator beforehand about any allergy. There is no hotel pick-up.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a towel, and a change of dry clothes if you plan to swim on the 3-hour cruise.
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses: the sun is strong on deck.
- A light windproof layer: it can be breezy once the boat leaves the harbour.
- Your booking confirmation (on your phone or printed) and a camera.
