Cancún to Isla Mujeres: ferry or catamaran?

Palm-lined beach and boats on the Cancún coast

Short answer: the public ferry is transport; a catamaran day trip is the outing itself. Take the ferry if you want to explore Isla Mujeres on your own timetable. Take a catamaran if you want a full day with snorkelling, beach time and lunch organised for you. This guide compares both, explains the national park you sail beside and lists what our trips include and what is paid separately. We did not read the ferry operators’ own timetables, so we give no ferry schedule or fare: check them with the operator.

Quick answers

  • Ferry: point-to-point; departure points cited by ferry booking sites are Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas.
  • Catamaran: about 8 hours (shared) or 7 hours (private), with a snorkelling stop at El Meco Reef, free time at Playa Norte, lunch at a beach club and an open bar.
  • Private option: a catamaran for up to 45 guests, or a 44 ft yacht for up to 13.
  • Sunset option: a 3-hour private catamaran from Puerto Juárez.
  • Paid separately: a dock fee, which the listing quotes at USD 20 per person at the time of writing.

The ferry: transport on your own timetable

Ferry booking sites list two departure points on the Cancún side: Puerto Juárez, north of the Hotel Zone, and Playa Tortugas, inside it. The crossing is short; those sites speak of roughly half an hour, which is not an official figure. We did not read the operators’ schedules or fares. The ferry suits you if you want to stay on the island, rent a golf cart or walk around on your own, and return when you decide. You organise the beach, the food and any snorkelling yourself.

The catamaran: the day is the trip

A catamaran day trip is built as a complete outing. Our shared catamaran to Isla Mujeres lasts about 8 hours, starts at 10:00 at Playa Tortugas (Km 6.5, Boulevard Kukulcán) and offers optional hotel pickup. It includes:

  • a snorkelling stop at El Meco Reef, with equipment and a snack afterwards;
  • free time at Playa Norte;
  • an international buffet lunch at a beach club and an open bar (rum, tequila, whisky and soft drinks), bottled water and soda;
  • a restroom on board.

The dock fee is not included: the listing says USD 20 per person, paid separately. The listing also says the tour is not recommended for pregnant travellers, people with back problems or heart conditions; read it before you book. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before departure.

The national park you sail beside

The waters on the west coast of Isla Mujeres, around Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc, form the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc National Park, created by a decree published on 19 July 1996. Its ecosystem is coral reef, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, and it covers about 8,673 hectares according to the SEMARNAT compendium. The park has a management programme (a summary was published in the Official Gazette in 2016).

As summarised from that programme, which we recommend you confirm in its current version, the rules include: daytime hours for recreational boating, life jackets in reef areas, no anchoring on coral formations, no fishing, and no touching or standing on the reef. We have not confirmed which of our stops lie inside the park boundary; the skipper will tell you where you can snorkel and where you cannot.
