Traditional dhow sailing at sunset off Zanzibar

Short answer: Mnemba is Zanzibar’s snorkelling day trip: a small island about 3 km off the north-east coast of the main island, surrounded by an oval reef declared a Marine Conservation Area. You reach it by boat from the beaches of Kendwa and Nungwi, and we offer four ways to go: a shared dhow, a shared catamaran, a private boat and a private catamaran. This guide explains what Mnemba is, compares the four trips and tells you what is included. We did not find an official text of the conservation area’s rules, so we list none: your crew will brief you before you get in the water.

Quick answers

  • Shared trips: from 9:00 (dhow) and 10:30 (catamaran); hotel pickup from Nungwi and Kendwa on the dhow and optional on the catamaran.
  • Minimum age: 4 on the shared catamaran; the dhow and private trips list no minimum.
  • Cancellation: free up to 24 hours before on the dhow, the shared catamaran and the private boat.

What Mnemba is

According to a Tanzanian tourism website, Mnemba is a single small island about 3 km off the north-east coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago, opposite Muyuni Beach. It is roughly triangular, about 500 m across and 1.5 km around, and is surrounded by an oval reef of about 7 by 4 km declared a Marine Conservation Area. The same page says the waters are an important breeding ground for green turtles, that the island is a roost for migratory wading birds, and that whale sharks, humpback whales and dolphins frequent the deeper waters. It adds that visibility of 20 to 40 metres is the norm for diving and that striped dolphins are seen most of the year at a site called Wattambomi, which suits snorkellers.

The page also points out something that matters if you search for the place: calling it “Mnemba Atoll” is not accurate, because an atoll encircles a lagoon. Our listings use both names (“Mnemba Atoll” and “Mnemba Island”), so you will see both.

We did not find an official text on access rules or on who manages the area, so we say nothing about permits or fees. The island itself has a private lodge, according to tourism sources, so day trips snorkel on the surrounding reef.
