Albufera at sunset: a boat ride from Valencia
5 min read

Short answer: the Albufera is a freshwater lagoon about 15 km south of Valencia, surrounded by rice fields and separated from the Mediterranean by a sandy barrier. A boat ride at sunset is the classic way to see it, and we offer two ways: a 3-hour sunset boat ride with transfer from Valencia, and a 6-hour private day tour with a paella lunch. This guide explains what the place is, how each trip works and what is and is not included. We rely on the official Ramsar information sheet and on our own listings.
Quick answers
- Where: Albufera de València Natural Park, 15 km south of the city of Valencia.
- Sunset trip: 3 hours, with a half-hour van ride from Valencia city; food and drinks are not included.
- Private day tour: 6 hours for up to 8 people, with hotel pickup in a private car, a one-hour boat ride on the lake and a paella lunch.
- Cancellation: the sunset trip is not refundable according to its listing; the private tour is free up to 24 hours before.
What the Albufera is
According to the official Ramsar information sheet, the Albufera is a coastal freshwater lagoon fed by several ravines and irrigation channels, surrounded by marshland reclaimed from the lake and now mostly rice fields, and closed off from the sea by a sandy barrier with Mediterranean scrub. The sheet puts the site 15 km south of Valencia and gives its area as 21,120 hectares. About 14,000 ha of the surroundings are rice paddies, and the lake itself covers about 2,000 ha of public land owned by the city of Valencia, with an average depth of about 1 m. The level of the water is regulated artificially according to the needs of the rice crop.
The Albufera de València Natural Park was declared by the Valencian Government’s Decree 89/1986 of 8 July. The site was added to the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance on 28 May 1990 according to the sheet (the Spanish ministry speaks of 1989), and a special protection plan for the park was approved on 1 October 1990. We do not quote bird counts because we did not read a current official census.

The sunset boat ride
Our sunset boat ride in the Albufera lasts 3 hours and starts with a half-hour van ride from Valencia city, from a selection of pickup points. The listing explains that the exact times are adapted to the sunset, which is why the calendar shows afternoon departures that change through the year.
- Not included: food and drinks.
- Accessibility: not suitable for wheelchair users, according to the listing.
- Cancellation: not refundable, according to the listing.
It is the simplest option if you have an evening free and want to see the lagoon in the best light.
The private day tour
If you would rather spend the day, the private Albufera day tour with paella lasts 6 hours for up to 8 people. The listing includes:
- pickup and drop-off at your hotel in a private car (an extra charge applies for hotels outside Valencia);
- a private guide for the whole tour;
- a walk through the park, a one-hour boat trip on the lake and bird watching;
- a paella lunch in a traditional restaurant facing the lake, with a glass of wine or a soft drink.
The listing notes that sunset and flamingo sightings depend on the time of the excursion and the season of the year. Gratuities are not included, and the tour is not wheelchair accessible. It can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.

When to go, and what we cannot confirm
